Triskelion Toastmasters - Meeting Notes Nov. 19, 2009

Fellow Toastmasters,

Thanksgiving was the theme of our last meeting. Connie Pshigoda presented cornucopia as the word of the day.

We heard two well-delivered speeches – Jeanne’s Icebreaker and Don’s 9th manual speech. Jeanne related her interest in books and their influence on her life. Don presented us with a moral dilemma – selfishness vs. altruism. He made a good case for not feeling guilty if you end up on the selfish side regularly. I don’t think his position was quite as extreme as Gordon Gekko’s in Wall Street, but Ayn Rand may have influenced him a little. Don was voted best speaker.

Evaluations by Linda Holm and Connie followed, with Connie winning the “good ear” prize.

The theme of Thanksgiving was extended through table topics, presented by Krystyna. Over the river and through the woods, we heard various vignettes on how our members spend the holiday. Dave Trzupek took top honors, describing how for the first time he was invited to two different feasts and loved every minute of it.

Have a great Thanksgiving, everyone. As always, feel free to visit http://3skelion.info to sign up for December 3rd roles, or e-mail Don Lyman or me.

Best regards,

Dan Pratt

Triskelion Toastmasters - Meeting Notes Nov. 12, 2009

Hi Everyone,

Connie Pshigoda delivered an excellent speech on the history of Betty Crocker, who, it turns out is a composite of many different women since the 1920’s used to represent General Mills as an expert chef. The speech was a milestone in Connie’s progress, as it completes her advanced storytelling manual. Krystyna Noworytta evaluated her speech.

We had a visitor – Varsha Agarwal – who is originally from India and is a housewife who is seeking employment and looking to improve interview/speaking skills.

Dan Pratt

Triskelion Toastmasters Backwards Meeting Notes for November 5, 2009

Farewell, gentle toastmasters,

Our meeting ran from about 12:30 to 11:45.

As Bera, Yogi would say - it was déjà vu all over again.

In conclusion, we learned that we're all a little mixed up sometimes.

The best table topic speech award was presented to Doris Steffe for telling us about her reunion.

We then voted for best table topic speech.

Connie Pshigoda gave her general evaluation of how the meeting went (or was to go). She noted that proper prior planning is particularly perpetually preferred. (Where was Peter Piper during all this?)

Reports from Linda Holm on how we did (or were going to do) regarding grammar and ahs. She recommends that we all need to slow down and use pauses more effectively. Overall, we still tend to use too many ahs.

Doris gave the timer's report. Most speakers will be within their time limits. However, the only speech (mine) was going to run three minutes beyond the limit of seven minutes. Thus, I was disqualified.

Linda presented table topics, which incidentally matched all of the speakers chosen topics. As confirmed by the grammarian report, most speakers incorporated the word of the day.

Krystyna evaluated my speech, noting that she was amazed that I was able to correlate the medical marijuana issue with the poetry of Lewis Carroll. (Does anyone recall the hooka-smoking caterpillar from "Through the Looking Glass?")

Next, Connie introduced her evaluation team.

I gave my speech on Jabberwocky, which must be delivered in a proper British accent. The first and last stanzas are exactly the same, so 'tis perfect for a backwards meeting - or any whacky occasion. I concluded with my tribute poem - Jabbertobacky, read in the character of one of the new dispensary dudes. Uhh.. What was I saying just then ...? Oh, yeah! I changed it from what I read at the meeting. I think the Carroll dude would have totally been cool with the word "motor-votes", but "voter folks" rhymes better, man.

'Twas Breckige, and the smoky tokes
Did mare and wanna misbehave;
All medi were the voter folks,
And the Mom's wrath outgave.

"Beware the Wackybacky, my son!
The seeds that bite, the coughs of hash!
Beware the Pot-head plant, and shun
The fumious Bong-o-flash!"

He took his zigzag joint in hand;
Long time the reefer fume he sought -
So rested he by the Hooka tree,
And rolled awhile in thought.

And as in puffish thought he vegged,
The Wackybacky, with cannibus aflame,
Came wafting through Norwegian wood,
And blurbled as it came!

One, two! One, two! and through and through
The zigzag blade went flicker-flax!
He left it dead, and with its head
He went scroungcraving snacks.

"And hast thou smoked the Wackybacky?
Come to my farms, my deadhead Dude!
O Maui Wowwie brownie day!
Just don't inhale your food."

'Twas Breckige, and the smoky tokes
Did mare and wanna misbehave;
All medi were the voter folks,
And the Mom's wrath outgave.

The Toastmaster introduced himself to give his speech on word play and nonsense.

Gary Fuller presented the word of the day - benighted, which is synonymous with backward.

The meeting opened with an impression of three characters that were a little slow of thought - Tim, Buck, and Tim Buck, too.

Thanks, in advance, to all who will attended. As Yoda (not related to Yogi) might have said – “Had by all, a fun time was.”

Pratt, Dan

Triskelion Meeting Notes - October 22, 2009

Thursday's Meeting of the Triskelion Toastmasters brought a "gregarious"* group! Toastmaster Connie Pshigoda opened the meeting with trivial "palaver"* on the numerous celebrations, observances and holidays in October.

Krystyna Noworytta gave her 5th CC speech titled: Coco Chanel: Her Character as Fashion Designer. Gary Fuller evaluated her presentation. We now know that the name of Coco's perfume, Chanel #5 comes from a winning race horse!

Dan Pratt challenged us with Table Topics following the October theme. We gained wisdom from Jeanne's grandmother's life tips; learned that "elk are where you find them" according to Don's father's wisdom; and Dan's retirement account is full of holes . . . donut holes, that is.

We always have a great time and learn from each other as we build our speaking skills. Please join us next week as Dan Pratt leads the hour as Toastmaster. Roles may be filled on the website: www.3skelion.info Have a great October!

Triskelion Meeting Notes - October 15, 2009

We had another great Triskelion Toastmaster's meeting this fine October Thursday. In true Triskelion fashion we accomplished this by hitting the trifecta with our superstars, our utility players, and our rookie participation.

Our super stars this week included Connie, Dave, and Nathan who came through at crunch time. Our utility players Krystyna, Dan, and Don kept the game close though reliable play. Our promising rookies Brendon and Jeanne sealed the game by stepping up in the roles of Timer, WOD, and topics master.

Connie was first at bat with an emotional story of a trip to the Grand Canyon with her daughters. She set the mood with a vivid description of her broken down rental car and a mob of crows eyeing their lunch. Its hard to push a car when the driver has a foot on the break.

Batting second was Krystyna with a talk about an English writer who decided, after 15 years, to leave Madison Avenue and move to southern France with his wife and two dogs to write books. Discovering a different life style, he began the second chapter in his life. Krystyna's Polish accent adds a lot of color to her story telling. She is really developing into an excellent speaker.

Third on the score card was Dan evaluating Connie's speech. He appreciated Connie's story of a mother and daughter adventure at the crux of a major transition in their lives.

Batting clean up was Dave with an evaluation of Krystyna's speech. I agree with Dave, Krystyna has great eye contact and real emotion in her delivery. Her passion for her subject is evident.

Brendan gets the win by pitching a perfect game as Topic Master. He was a penciled in as last minute starter and really delivered by challenging each of us with baseball related topics.

Here's the change-ups, curves, and fast balls he threw us. Don answered, "What’s in a Dodger dog?" by relating his first trip to Dodger Stadium. Dan's ex-wife would be the most likely reason he would crack a bat over his knee... (I can relate). Jeanne thinks baseball players chew tobacco to keep the throngs of female groupies at bay. Connie figures that baseball players scratch because of harsh detergent. Krystyna delighted us with a story of her trip to Cooperstown.

Dave was our MVP winning both best evaluator and best table topic speaker. He shared funny and interesting anecdotes on booing by fans. He concluded there is never a good reason to "boo"; nevertheless, the Philedelphia fans have perfected it to a fine art.

Our fellow Toastmaster Nathan is a superstar this week because he gave an important speech today before a House committee in Washington, DC. He delivered a 5-minute testimony on underinsurance. We hope to hear from him soon on his experience.

Let's extend this win streak by making next week another success. We still need a Toastmaster and speakers. Get off the bench and into the game!

Triskelion Toastmasters Meeting Notes - Oct 8, 2009

Hello Toastmasters,
Yesterday's meeting was lively and warm in spite of the cold weather. Toastmaster Connie Pshigoda opened the meeting with introductions of 2 new members: Paulette Malone and Jeanne Rutgers. They jumped right in with enthusiastic participation.
Don Lyman stepped up as the speaker giving his audience a descriptive journey to the mountain top and back in "He Said, She Heard." Definitely contest material!
Dan Pratt provided two Words of the Day:

Firebrand (noun)

1. An argumentative troublemaker or revolutionary; one who agitates against the current situation.

"The member of the college's Communist League was a firebrand who would launch a sit-in or protest march at a moment's notice."

2. A torch or other burning stick with a flame at one end.

"The crowd cheered as a firebrand was tossed on the huge pile of wood to start the traditional homecoming bonfire."

Logomachy (noun) plural logomachies

1. Dispute over the meaning of words

2. A conflict waged only as a battle of words

Table Topics ranged from a variety of questions including most outrageous fashion statement to most unusual pet. The winning speaker was new member Jeanne Rutgers. The meeting closed at 12.45-pm followed by an Officer's Meeting.

Roles for next week can be accessed on the website: www.3skelion.info so please, join us next week for another great meeting.

Toastmaster Krystyna Noworytta opened the meeting by introducing Peter Mayle, an English writer’s life style in Province France.

Then Ed Johnson gave his fifth speech from the Advance Manual on Speaking to Inform. As an avid student of history, Ed informed us about the battle of Long Island during the American Revolution.

Nathan Wilkes made an impromptu speech on how he introduced President Obama in Grand Junction.

Dan Pratt evaluated Ed’s speech; and Dave Trzupek evaluated Nathan’s speech. Connie Pshigoda gave the Word of the Day, and prepared the Table Topics, which required the Interpretation of Freedom.

Don Lyman served as Grammarian and Ah Counter. Gary Fuller served as Timer and GE. Ed Johnson won as best speaker. Dave Trzupek as best evaluator and Don Lyman as best Table Topic Award.

Please commit the roles in the roster for next weeks meeting before Wednesday.

Triskelion Toastmaster Meeting Notes - September 10, 2009

Today’s meeting was more civil than not, and was executed with as much decorum as Dan’s laid-back style could muster. Krystyna presented the word of the day. Connie, our club president, told the tale of her predecessors’ struggles long ago, and how their story impacts her life still today. Dave Tzrupek, graciously filling in as evaluator, performed an excellent assessment of her speech. It was great to see Dave again!

Julie Williams, (much thinner for some reason) who we were also very glad to see, presented table topics. (Congratulations to Julie on the birth of her second child.) In harmony with the theme of decorum and civility, she touched on situations at the movies, in traffic, e-mails, cell phone use, and at the grocery store. Dave won best table topic speaker.

Connie led a discussion of club business in which she shared feedback from our Area Governor visit, new materials for charting progress, etc. Dan should have raised his hand a little bit more, but most members present exhibited good manners.

We should mention that one of our club members, Nathan Wilkes, recently introduced President Obama at a Town Hall Meeting in Grand Junction.

You can see Nathan's speech here:

You can read the story here:

All roles for next meeting are open. Please sign up at 3skelion.info and EDIT the next meeting’s Duty Roster. If you need help, please contact Don Lyman or Dan Pratt.

We hope your Labor Day was enjoyable! Come visit us soon. We’ll try to be civil.

Triskelion Meeting Notes - August 13, 2009

Triskelion Toastmasters is getting a nice rhythm back in these dog days of summer. For the second week we had a full roster and two speakers.

Toastmaster Don Lyman picked on Texas by relating some of the strange laws they have. Laura Drury was our word master and brought us "desultory".

Our first speech was by Krystyna who informed us about “Casmir Pulaski a hero of American Revolution”. Pulaski even saved George Washington's life! This was Speech 3 for Krystyna: Get to the Point — Clearly state your speech goal, and make sure that every element of your speech focuses on that goal.

Our second speech was Jason's "Two-phase Flow in Piping: Part 2". This was Speech 8 for Jason: Get Comfortable With Visual Aids — Examines the use of slides, transparencies, flip charts, whiteboards, or props. He is honing his presentation for a big engineering conference coming up next Thursday.

Gary Fuller returned from out of town and served as our General Evaluator. Dan Pratt continued his evaluation of Jason from last week. Laura evaluated Krystyna's speech and got credit for it in her leadership book.

Connie was our topic master for the second week in a row and we drew from her tin of thought-provoking question cards. Gary won table topics with a story of teaching friends how to play pinochle. Krystyna took best speaker and Laura best evaluator.

Next week we have a District officer as our guest so please help us fill all roles! Let's put on a great meeting.

Best,
Don Lyman

Triskelion Toastmaster Meeting Notes - August 6, 2009

Two guests (Christine Ames & Steve Brown) joined members for today's Triskelion Toastmasters meeting. Jason Carty and Don Lyman gave great technical speeches with Don taking the Best Speaker Award. Dan Pratt and Linda Holm served as speech evaluators and Linda won Best Evaluator.

Table topics tickled out brains with "question cards" asking: What is your favorite invention? If you could have a wild animal as a pet what would it be? Don Lyman won Best Table Topics for eloquently telling the best thing about the person seated to his right. Great topics and great speaking!

Next week's speakers will be Jason Carty, giving part 2 of his technical speech and Linda Holm, with Dan Pratt evaluating one of the speeches. Please join us next week and reserve your role as soon as possible.

Triskelion Meeting Notes - July 30, 2009

Triskelion Toastmaster Meeting Notes for July 30, 2009

The theme of Thursday’s meeting was “Excuses, Excuses” led by Toastmaster Dan Pratt, who attempted to invent several excuses for not having a printed agenda. No problem, however – a dog ate his list of excuses.

We had two guests – Tom and Jackie – who are local marriage counselors.

Jason Carty delivered his 5th speech, entitled “To Tile, or Not to Tile.” He related his experiences during a recent home improvement project and gave us all tips for doing a great tile job. Although it seems like a lot of work, I’m sure Jason will want to repeat the process for anyone who has a large bathroom or Roman courtyard they would like finished. (Just kidding, Jason. Tile work ranks up there with helping someone move their grand piano up eight narrow flights of stairs.)

Don Lyman presented table topics which involved ethics questions based on Randy Cohen’s column which is syndicated by The New York Times. There were very thoughtful responses, with no one choosing “the dark side” in their solutions.

We concluded with a challenge to all our members to bring not just a friend, but also another member.

Meeting Notes - 23 July 2009

This week’s meeting was great! We had four guests: Tom Hobbs, fellow Toastmaster and area 5 governor, John Graham and Nicole Fatchaline from the Kiewett Company and John Cannata a coworker of Don Lyman.

WOD – was fruition which was presented by Linda Holm.

Laura Drury gave her “ice breaker” speech, “Be yourself – everyone else is already taken”. Laura captured us with childhood events and how she became herself as a young adult, college graduate and computer professional. Laura credited her love of traveling and of meeting people with the person she has become.

Don Lyman evaluated Laura’s speech giving out positive and done right feedback.

Doris Steffe was our table topicmaster. Doris challenged volunteers to help “sell” and “defend” unusual housing/living quarters. Volunteers found themselves living in Titan Missile Silos, Off-Shore platforms, Nuclear Power Plants, etc. Tom Hobbs was voted best table topic with his story about living in a missile silo.

Dan Pratt was our General Evaluator. Meeting started promptly. Many thanks went to Cindy Castilow and Connie Pshigoda for being our timer and grammarian/Ah counter. Everyone was well within their time ranges. There were some tenses that did not match and several people had Ahs. We did not have a theme for the meeting which Dan would have liked us to have.

The meeting was ended with the TM testing us to remember definitions of past “Words of the Day”.

Connie Pshigoda will not be in attendance the next two weeks.

Toastmaster for the next meeting will be Dan Pratt. Thank you for volunteering Dan!

Don Lyman has volunteered to be a speaker. Thank you for volunteering Don!

Meeting Notes - July 16, 2009

Thursday's Toastmaster meeting was full of high spirits. Connie started a new manual and the first project was storytelling. We all gathered in a circle and listened to her telling of the story of "The North Wind and the Sun". She picked this story for it's moral of gentle persuasion. It is a great lesson for us as a club as we strive to meet our goals.

Don was Toastmaster, Dan served as General Evaluator, Linda evaluated Connie's speech, and Doris was our timer.

Our Table Topic Master was Ed. He asked each of us to define the word "gelogenic". Most thought the word had the Latin root gel, but it is actually Greek meaning laughter. Don won the table topic thinking the word sounded like an Italian bicycle team. The true word of the day was "ebullient".

This week we will be meeting in a different room, so please gather in the lobby. Linda will be our Toastmaster, Laura will give her Ice Breaker and Ed will evaluate. We hope to see you there!

Thursday, July 9, 2009

Triskelion Meeting Notes - July 9, 2009

Yes, it's finally summer---and the temp is up----but the hottest topics were addressed in today's meeting. Eight members attended with Connie Pshigoda serving as Toastmaster. Krystyna gave her 2nd speech from the CC manual ("Organize Your Speech") on Poland's Casmir Pulaski, a hero of the American Revolution.

Dan Pratt evaluated Krystyna's speech; Doris Steffe gave the Word of the Day and served as Timer; Linda Holms challenged us with Table Topics and Don Lyman served as GE. Returning member, Neal Huffman won the Table Topic Award.

Congratulations to member Julie Williams and newborn son, Cade. Both are home and doing well.

Next week's agenda is filling, but we need all roles filled before Wednesday:
TM - Don Lyman
WOD - Connie
Speaker #1 - Carolyn
Speaker #2 -
Evaluator #1 -
Evaluator #2 -
Table Topics -
GE -
Timer -
Ah Counter/Grammarian -

Have a great week-----see you on Thursday!

Triskelion Meeting Notes - July 2, 2009

Our club was again in rare form with Dan Pratt as Toastmaster. The theme of the meeting went along with the 4th of July theme of Freedom and Independence. Dan was a little too free, however, as his meeting agenda was virtually invisible.

Don Lyman gave the best Word of the Day presentation we have seen for a long time, giving us the word “rectitude.” After all, it was just the right thing to do.

Next, we took a journey with Linda Holm, visiting Mexico in early July of 1976. It was there that she and her fellow expedition members were saved from scarab beetles and a sinking (and apparently stinking) minibus by a colorful character whom she compared to Indiana Jones!

Connie Pshigoda evaluated her speech, giving some expert pointers.

Krystyna Noworytta gave us Table Topics, asking us what we would do in various situations on a cruise ship. We learned that Cindy Castilow’s former boyfriend Brad Pitt was sometimes seen dining with her, possibly to make Angelina jealous. Cindy entertained us the most, and won best Table Topic speaker award.

Our club president, Connie, presented Doris Steffe and Krystyna with new member Toastmaster pins. Laura Drury just submitted her application, so we will also present her with a pin, possibly at our next meeting.

We will meet this coming Thursday, July 9th. We’re still looking for a Toastmaster, but Linda volunteered for Table Topics, and Carolyn Hariton will deliver a speech.

Also, I just talked with Krystyna. I think she is trying to prepare her 2nd speech for this Thursday.
See you tomorrow.

“Summer Time Blues”

Summer time blues are often brought on by too much work and not enough time to play outdoors. And even when we have had time to be outdoors the constant bombardment of storms and bad weather has interrupted our plans and added to our blues. One cure for the summer time blues caused by the bad weather was to use the time indoors to work on our Toastmaster speeches!

Ed Johnson gave a highly technical and advanced (beyond 12 minute) speech on the history and impact of “Five Equations that Changed the World”. This was definitely subject matter that was meant to be presented by a professional engineer like Ed. Ed didn’t recommend that women use this information at a cocktail party to impress the men but he suggested that knowing and sharing this information with our children would be a way to impress them.

Don Lyman evaluated Ed’s speech. Don reminded all of us that a speech ending should be strong and conclusive.

Dan Pratt presented table topics asking us to recall good or bad memories about moving. Our newest member Laura Drury and guest Jeff Johns graciously volunteered along with Dave Trzupek and Linda Holm. Jeff John was voted best table topic with his story about moving without actually moving in order to rid his home of termites!

Many thanks go to Krystyna Noworytta and Doris Steffe.

Krystyna handled multiple roles of General Evaluator and Ah counter and Grammarian. Doris did an outstanding job as timer.

I asked for volunteers for Toastmaster for the next meeting.

Remember the Triskelion Toastmaster picnic being hosted by our president, Connie Pshigoda on July 17, 2009.

Meeting Notes - 18 June 2009

We had a great meeting this past Thursday. Jason enlightened us on the history (and his love of) coffee and Don gave us all a great overview of our super new Triskelion web site and many of the great new features and additions to it!

Jason was awarded best speech, Gary was best evaluator and one of our guests, Janice as well as Don tied for best Table Topics. Thanks to everyone for your participation in what was a really great meeting.

I was hoping to use one of the great new tools on our web site - the ability to document roles for the upcoming meeting - but when we left the meeting on Thursday all roles were open as they still are today. So...to start with we need someone to volunteer for Toastmaster and begin to fill the roles for next week's meeting. Connie will be unable to attend the meeting and Gary and a few of our other "veteran and consistent" members are out for a few weeks due to other commitments so we really need to look to our officers and members to step up as Thursday will be here before we know it.

If someone can please volunteer for the Toastmaster role before the weekend is out that would be great. And if anyone else is interested in any other roles, please let me know and I will keep track of those roles until the Toastmaster for this week is identified.

Here are the roles:

Toastmaster

General Evaluator

Speaker #1

Evaluator #1

Speaker #2

Evaluator #2

Word of the Day

Timer

Grammarian

Ah-Counter

Table Topics

Thanks to everyone - have a great weekend - and to all the fathers out there
- enjoy your very special day!

The Word of the Day was: constellate, meaning to unite in a cluster.
Guest Janice Baker won Best Table Topics Speaker with her tale of the mystery midnight alarm malfunction.
Please plan on joining us next week for more spectacular speeches, brain-boosting Table Topics, enlightening evaluations and just plain fun! Have a great week.

How I Plan to Spend My Summer Vacation

Well, we gallivanted (roamed about for pleasure without any definite plan) as it turns out and took twists and turns in our vocal voyage.

Connie Pshigoda gave an award for outstanding physical fitness and devotion to helping others achieve their goals. I had no idea I was such a great a person, but Connie was so convincing, I had to accept. (Loved the trophy.)

Julie Williams convinced us to outsource our resources (I’m hiring her to write all of my speeches from now on). She used a phrase rarely heard nowadays: “on time and under budget.”

Don Lyman evaluated Connie’s speech and Ed Johnson evaluated Julie’s speech.

Then Ed, with such a strong desire to educate our members as to what a hot potato speech, gave us a heated tubular discussion and technical analysis of the elevated kinetics of the lowly tater. He was HOT, and I don’t mean necessarily physically attractive to me, but I think everyone enjoyed his spud-of-the-moment presentation.

Julie Williams (also double-dipping into the role pool) presented table topics. One of our guests (Laura) tied with Dave Trzupek for best answer. Their topics were based on coinage that Julie forgot to leave with the Treasurer.

Kudos go to Gary Fuller for his very comprehensive grammar report, and also to Julie for best speech and Ed Johnson for his evaluation.

Meeting Prep - 02 June 2009

Greetings, fellow toastmasters and friends,

The theme for the Thursday Toastmasters meeting is “How I Plan to Spend My Summer Vacation” and the challenge will be not to use the word “Staycation.”

For some of us, this will be the only type of vacation we’ll get, but for most of you, we’d like to meddle in your lives as much as possible, so inquiring minds just want to know!

If I can’t have a vacation, then darn it, I want to hear about someone else’s dreams.

In September, we could have another meeting to see how your plans worked or didn’t work out as you had hoped. We can also revel in your misery. It’s all good!

The only plans I have for the meeting so far are:

TM – me

Speaker #1 – Julie Williams – Speech #3 (Get to the Point) which may be a powerful point presentation.

Evaluator – Don Lyman (thanks for volunteering)

So there’s still lots of opportunity to step up and join the jamboree – M – I – C (uh – I guess that’s another song and probably copyrighted).

That was an “uh” not an “ah” if you’re counting. Anyway, love to hear from you all.

Regards,
Dan Pratt

Toastmasters Meeting Notes - 5/21/2009

Today's meeting was another fine gathering and a great way to spend the lunch hour.

Don served as Toastmaster and chose a "My Fair Lady" theme for the meeting. We will honor our fallen heroes coming up on Monday, but did you know that May 20th is Eliza Doolittle Day?

Connie presented her 2nd speech from the Advanced Communication Series--Special Occasion Speeches. Today's project was Speaking in Praise. She honored Ralph C. Smedley... founder of Toastmasters. Her speech gave all of us new insights into Ralph's history and was a great introduction for our guests Al and Steve. Gary served as General Evaluator and Dan evaluated Connie's speech.

Carolyn was our Table Topics Master. She chose a theme of "life questions". She hit us with questions such as: What song describes your life? Tell about a recent time when you helped a stranger. Tell us about an event that changed your life. If you could invent one thing to help the world what would it be? Tell us about a movie that made you cry. What makes you feel close to nature.

Connie and Gary tied for best Table Topic. Connie would invent a potion that would soothe the butterflies that we ToastMasters get. Gary related to us how his marriage was a life changing event. Dan chose Tom Petty's "Into the Great Wide Open" as his theme song since he is “a rebel without a clue.”

Linda provide a fun word of the day: toady.

Next week we have officer speeches and elections. Our esteemed President, Mike, will preside over the meeting. Please make it a priority to attend.

I leave you with a quote from "My Fair Lady":

Colonel Pickering: Have you NO morals, man?
Alfred P. Doolittle: Nah. Nah, can't afford 'em guv'nor. Neither could you, if you was as poor as me.

Krystyna's Ice Breaker Speech gave the audience insight to the remarkable achievements she has made in her life---including learning the U.S. tax structure once she became a citizen.

Meeting Notes - March 5 2009

Here is our meeting summary for March 5, 2009.

Fun and Refreshments!
Today's meeting was a refreshing break from our normal routine. We had pizza and pop! :-) We had a short, mini-meeting. Each officer described their duties. After a short review of meeting responsibilities, we spent the remainder socializing. The turn out was encouraging.

Focus on Fundamentals!

I think in these trying times it is important to keep our heads up, stay positive and focus on what is really important in life. It is also important to stay relaxed and calm, yet alert.

I extend a special thanks to Connie, VP of Membership, for putting together today's shindig on short notice. We held a formal initiation ceremony for two of our newer members, Todd and Linda. We also had a guest today, Noah.

March Madness - Ice Cream!
I liked today's meeting so much I'm going to do it again. I'm calling an ice cream social next week! Crazy? Maybe. ;-) Call it March Madness. I'll order some Subway too to make sure we get some real food in the afternoon.

I'll end with my quote for the day: "English is a funny language--that explains why we park our car on the driveway and drive our car on the parkway."

Keep Toasting. Please RSVP to the Ice Cream Social ASAP. Thank you.

Mike
Triskelion President

Toastmaster Connie Pshigoda opened the meeting with Chocolate trivia . . .although chocolate is not a trivial indulgence!

Todd Rys gave his second speech from the Competent Speaker Manual titled: "Disneyland is for Kids." Our club plans to join Todd & his family on their Disney journey in May. (just kidding, Todd)

Guest, John Mager entertained and enlightened us with an impromptu speech about his search for a Toastmaster Club and took the winning speech honor.

Evaluators, Dan Pratt and Gary Fuller gave insight to all in improving speaking skill and ability.

Krystyna dealt the cards for Table Topics and Mike Angell won . . .hands down!
Thanks to all who helped make this another successful meeting! Dark Chocolate with Chili & Cherries and Chocolate Girl Scout cookies may become the new meeting staple!

Mike Angell will be the TM next week so please email him with the role you wish to fill. Have a great week!

Meeting Notes - 29 January 2009

Meeting Summary
January 29, 2009

Today we had fudge cookies and milk, served by Toastmaster Mike. (Mmmmm, cookies) Guests today were Krystyna and Doris from Shaw. The word of the day was “indubitable”.
Connie gave an entertaining speech. Her regaling tale transported us to a contemporary Neal Diamond concert. Connie’s daughter has an “inside track” at the Pepsi center. (Concert fans take note!). Daughter called mom at the last minute an d before they knew husband and wife were off to see Neal Diamond live! The concert went “So well, so well, so well.”
Dave followed with a mock sales presentation to CIO of Fuller Corporation, Gary Fuller. With an informative speech that included role playing, Dave taught us what to do, and what NOT to do, when conducting business to business sales.
Dan, Gary and Cary rounded out the evaluation team with sagacity. Nate lead us in a quizzical round of table topics. Best speaker, evaluator and topic-er were Connie, Cary and Mike respectively. Roles for Next Week are as follows:
Toastmaster – Deron
Speaker 1 – Mike
Speaker 2 – Gary
General Evaluator – Dan
Table Topics – Open
Grammarian - Open
Ah Counter - Open
Timer - Open
Thank you, everyone. Keep toasting.

Meeting Notes - 22 January 2009

Dan was the Toastmaster and opened the meeting with the word of the day: affable.

The theme of the meeting was Fun Facts and Dan delivered several fun facts compiled by the Federal Bureau of Miscellaneous Information, including:

  • As a result of recent technological advances in lasik surgery, hindsight is now 20/40.
  • In Binghamton, New York, it’s illegal for a grown man to go by the name Ronny.
  • With the soaring popularity of the telephone and the Internet, by 2006 fewer than one in seven homes still had a telegraph.

Jason Carty gave an insightful speech, comparing nuances in speeches by Patrick Henry, Abe Lincoln and FDR and reminding us that some of the greatest speeches have been delivered during times of conflict, when bold leadership and inspiration was especially needed. Still, the best speeches will have a well-defined opening, body and conclusion.

Don Lyman evaluated Jason’s speech, giving good suggestions on minor improvements for the next time.

Gary Fuller presented the Table Topics, which were mostly provided by Mike Angell, who was in our thoughts.

Is there ever a day when mattresses are NOT on sale? Deron “White Sale” White deftly handled this topic, explaining the merchant’s assumption that the only time people notice a sale is when they’re ready to buy. This strategy also applies to linen sales and men’s suits. These also seem to be constantly sold at “discount” prices. However, most of us (especially Toastmasters) are acutely aware of how skimpy the emperor’s new suit appears. They’re threading on thin ice!

What are the differences you have noticed between her native language and American English? Krystyna, very graciously accepting this question, informed us that the English word for “corner” could be misconstrued when trying to convey the same meaning with just a straight translation to Polish, her native tongue. We’re not certain what “bad” word she was referring to, but I think we got her point. I remembered learning in Spanish class that sopa isn’t soap, ropa isn’t rope, and the “butter” is meant to kill ya!

How do those dead bugs get into closed light fixtures? Nathan Wilkes, sharing his knowledge of secret societies, revealed a little-known dark conspiracy. It turns out that lighting vendors (beginning with Edison) infuse bug larvae into fixtures during the manufacturing process, and these larvae grow and die and eventually block out most of the light. Planned obsolescence! Who knew? Nathan also informed us that if you eat guava you will be eating worms that are always present in the fruit. The strategy is to eat the fruit when it is just turning ripe or before. Otherwise, you might bite into some nice juicy full-grown worms. Thus, the debate between “more taste” and “less filling” goes on.

Considering all the lint you get in your dryer, if you kept drying your clothes would they eventually just disappear? Don related a sordid tale of his past, regarding already-thin sports tee shirts wearing down to almost nothing. Extrapolating this for the question at hand, he concluded that yes, eventually, you would finally have to tape on the last bit of lint – sheer terror for most of us. We also learned that his family and closest friends call him Donny (almost illegal in Binghamton, NY).

Is it true that the only difference between a yard sale and a trash pickup is how close to the road the stuff is placed? Jason told us of past yard sales where his family brought home some pretty weird stuff. It happened that some of the overstuffed sofas and chairs were stuffed with creepy crawlers that were tough to deal with. Talk about expensive furniture. Also, he described seeing gaudy 70’s and 80’s plaid clothes that would match my typical wardrobe, like the red and yellow leisure suit I wear at home.

Dan, please tell us your best bug story. I related that when I was in high school, my bedroom was in the basement, where large red crickets occasionally crawled into my shoes at night. This would give me a pleasant surprise when I’d be hurrying to put my shoes on in the morning. (At least I didn’t have to go without a warm, crunchy breakfast on those days.) That last part was something I thought about after I sat down, but I think everyone was grossed out already. I apologize to those of you who might be eating lunch now.

Nathan won the TT prize, which I wish could have been a box of gummy worms. But I think all attendees appreciated the yarns that were skillfully woven at this meeting. Isn’t it amazing how much our hindsight has improved?

Best regards,

Dan Pratt

Meeting Notes - 15 January 2009

Thanks to everyone for your participation in the meeting last week. While we were short a speaker we were not short on Table Topics fun thanks to Ed who challenged us all to come up with a unique definition to the word: "infracaninophile". Deron won by "vote" of what everyone thought was the correct answer -- which turned out to be the correct answer which is: "One who is a supporter or champion of the underdog. Great job Deron and great table topics idea, Ed! However, despite Deron's correct answer, the group voted Dan as the best table topics person -- as always he provided an entertaining and "Dan-esque" type response. Congratulations Dan!

We heard a great speech from Carolyn who spoke about our health care system and the challenges we face correcting it. Jason gave a nice evaluation of her speech noting the amazing statistics of where the U.S. stands in relation to many other countries with our health care system.

Our General Evaluator, Mike, pointed out some great suggestions for us to focus on as we continue our meetings -- namely never leaving the podium "empty" as there should always be someone at the podium addressing the group -- if not with a speaker or table topics via the Toastmaster "filling any time voids" as needed. Also, we didn't do a great job using the WOD today (which was querulous -- habitually complaining) which agreed as a group we needed better emphasis on going forward.

Our roles filled and not for the next meeting on Thursday, January 22nd are as follow:

Toastmaster -- Eric
WOD -- Linda
Speaker #1 -- Jason
Speaker #2 -- Todd or Connie (please decide between yourselves whom will speak, please and let Eric know)
General Evaluator -- Julie
Evaluator #1 -- Don Lyman
Evaluator #2 -- OPEN
Table Topics -- Mike
Ah Counter -- Carolyn
Timer -- Dan
Grammarian -- OPEN

Also, as a reminder we have Dave T. scheduled to speak at our Jan. 29th meeting.

Meeting Notes Jan 8, 2009

Triskelion Toastmasters
Meeting Minutes
Jan 8, 2009

Yours truly served as Toastmaster. Julie opened with a speech about the joys of parenthood. To her, being a proud parent certainly has advantages over the DINK life she previously lead. (dual income no kids) She also shared that, once again, she is expecting. Linda followed up with a speech on New Year's Resolutions. She discussed various traditions throughout history. Connie lead us in a round of table topics. Ed, Dan and Don rounded out the evaluation team. The Word of the Day, Ubiquitous, was provided by Carolyn.

Next Meeting
Julie is Toastmaster. Carolyn and Don Lindgren are lined up as speakers. Ed is going to tackle table topics. Jason is evaluating. Dan is Grammarian. Mike will be general evaluator. We are still open for Word of the day, Evaluator 2, Timer and Ah counter.

Officer Openings
Dave Trzupek has been nominated VP of Education. I ask for someone to second the nomination. Assuming we don't hear from anyone else, we can vote this week.

We also have openings for VP of Membership and Treasurer.

Humor
A billionaire throws a massive party for his 50th birthday. During this party, he grabs the microphone and announces to his guests that down in the garden of his mansion he has a swimming pool with two great white sharks in it.

"I will give anything of mine to the man who swims across that pool."

SUDDENLY, there is a great splash. All the guests of the party run to the pool to see what has happened.

In the pool a man is swimming as hard as he can. Fins come out of the water and jaws are snapping and this guy just keeps on going. The sharks are gaining on him and this guy reaches the end and gets out of the pool, tired and soaked. The billionaire grabs the microphone and says, "I am a man of my word. Anything of mine I will give. So sir what will it be?" The guy grabs the microphone and says, "Why don't we start with the name of the guy who pushed me in!"
