The contest winner was Connie, our club president. However, since she will not be able to participate in the Area M-3 contest on April 5, Don will represent us in the International Speech contest and Jeanne will be competing in the TT contest. Congratulations to our newest member Joe, who braved the crowd and showed that he indeed can also warm up a room with an impromptu speech. Joe Abey thought that he has been most successful in becoming at ease in both social and business gatherings. Although he’s mostly comfortable in small groups, he indicated that Toastmasters would help expand his comfort level in larger groups.
Following the four speeches, I had one other question for Ed Johnson and Gary Fuller to practice their extemporaneous styles during the regular Table Topic Speeches. Ed claimed that he could not live without fast Fourier transforms. Without them, we would not have the wave at Coors Field.

Triskelion Toastmaster Meeting Notes - March 4, 2010
Thursday's meeting opened with Toastmaster Connie Pshigoda greeting members and welcoming guest, Area Governor, Emmy Poncetti. Joe Abey was welcomed as a new member. The Word of the Day was contest with two pronunciations to get us in the mindset for upcoming speech contests.
Speaker, Don Lyman gave an inspirational speech and challenged the audience with the question "Is the future worth the present moments we are giving up now?" Emmy evaluated Don's speech with gusto in acknowledging his confidence and skill in delivering a top notch presentation.
Dan Pratt led the Table Topics with Jeanne Rutgers and Gary Fuller tying for Best Table Topic Speaker.
Our club has recently revised its meeting schedule to the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of each month. Our next meeting will be March 18. We will be conducting the Table Topics speech contest, so please attend and participate. We need judges, timers and contestants!

Triskelion Toastmaster Meeting Notes - February 25, 2010
Krystyna Noworytta served as Toastmaster on February 25, 2010.
She opened the meeting with a formal announcement in an absence of Connie Pshigoda. She began the meeting announcing a schedule change. We will meet on March 4, and Emmy will be visiting us. She will be reviewing our Club’s goals from last June. Our next meeting will be March 18, and we will be doing a Club Speech contest for our Table Topics.
Krystyna welcomed Joe Abey, from Country Financial, who was our guest and became an instant member.
The theme of the meeting was “Omnivore VS, Omnivore”. Krystyna compared 2 omnivores and their habits, the Alaskan Brown Bear and a today’s Mr. Anthony Smith.
The word of the day was Omnivore; one that is omnivorous (adj.).
Avidly taking in everything as if devouring or consuming, or feeding on both animal and vegetable substance.
We continued listening to a presentation, by Rory Vaden, in a series of six CDs focusing on how to develop humor for your presentations. The series is named “The Audience is NOT in Their Underwear.” Rory told us that we are all capable of being funny and he disclosed some of principles. His speech was about 20 minutes, and it was very instructive. We will try to continue this series each week (even in “off” weeks), unless we have two live speakers. Dan Pratt will have handouts available whenever he plays the CDs.
Don Lyman challenged us with Table Topics on outdoor activities. He himself is an advanced hiker. For example, as a Mayor of a city, how would you allocate funds if you had a choice of either a park, a trail, or public library. How would you distract a bear to protect yourself? My solution: throw the open jar of honey at him, and then, slowly walk away.
Dan Pratt and Gary Fuller won an award as “Best Speakers”.
In conclusion, Connie Pshigoda made the decision to change
our club’s scheduled meetings. We will meet every other Thursday, the 1st and 3rd week of the month. Our next meeting will take place on March 4 and 18. Emmy will be visiting on the 4th, and we will hold a Club Speech contest the 18th.

Triskelion Toastmasters - Meeting Notes Nov. 19, 2009
Fellow Toastmasters,
Thanksgiving was the theme of our last meeting. Connie Pshigoda presented cornucopia as the word of the day.
We heard two well-delivered speeches – Jeanne’s Icebreaker and Don’s 9th manual speech. Jeanne related her interest in books and their influence on her life. Don presented us with a moral dilemma – selfishness vs. altruism. He made a good case for not feeling guilty if you end up on the selfish side regularly. I don’t think his position was quite as extreme as Gordon Gekko’s in Wall Street, but Ayn Rand may have influenced him a little. Don was voted best speaker.
Evaluations by Linda Holm and Connie followed, with Connie winning the “good ear” prize.
The theme of Thanksgiving was extended through table topics, presented by Krystyna. Over the river and through the woods, we heard various vignettes on how our members spend the holiday. Dave Trzupek took top honors, describing how for the first time he was invited to two different feasts and loved every minute of it.

Triskelion Toastmasters - Meeting Notes Nov. 12, 2009
Hi Everyone,
Connie Pshigoda delivered an excellent speech on the history of Betty Crocker, who, it turns out is a composite of many different women since the 1920’s used to represent General Mills as an expert chef. The speech was a milestone in Connie’s progress, as it completes her advanced storytelling manual. Krystyna Noworytta evaluated her speech.
We had a visitor – Varsha Agarwal – who is originally from India and is a housewife who is seeking employment and looking to improve interview/speaking skills.

Triskelion Toastmasters Backwards Meeting Notes for November 5, 2009
Farewell, gentle toastmasters,
Our meeting ran from about 12:30 to 11:45.
As Bera, Yogi would say - it was déjà vu all over again.
In conclusion, we learned that we're all a little mixed up sometimes.
The best table topic speech award was presented to Doris Steffe for telling us about her reunion.
We then voted for best table topic speech.
Connie Pshigoda gave her general evaluation of how the meeting went (or was to go). She noted that proper prior planning is particularly perpetually preferred. (Where was Peter Piper during all this?)
Reports from Linda Holm on how we did (or were going to do) regarding grammar and ahs. She recommends that we all need to slow down and use pauses more effectively. Overall, we still tend to use too many ahs.
Doris gave the timer's report. Most speakers will be within their time limits. However, the only speech (mine) was going to run three minutes beyond the limit of seven minutes. Thus, I was disqualified.
Linda presented table topics, which incidentally matched all of the speakers chosen topics. As confirmed by the grammarian report, most speakers incorporated the word of the day.
Krystyna evaluated my speech, noting that she was amazed that I was able to correlate the medical marijuana issue with the poetry of Lewis Carroll. (Does anyone recall the hooka-smoking caterpillar from "Through the Looking Glass?")
Next, Connie introduced her evaluation team.
I gave my speech on Jabberwocky, which must be delivered in a proper British accent. The first and last stanzas are exactly the same, so 'tis perfect for a backwards meeting - or any whacky occasion. I concluded with my tribute poem - Jabbertobacky, read in the character of one of the new dispensary dudes. Uhh.. What was I saying just then ...? Oh, yeah! I changed it from what I read at the meeting. I think the Carroll dude would have totally been cool with the word "motor-votes", but "voter folks" rhymes better, man.
'Twas Breckige, and the smoky tokes
Did mare and wanna misbehave;
All medi were the voter folks,
And the Mom's wrath outgave.
"Beware the Wackybacky, my son!
The seeds that bite, the coughs of hash!
Beware the Pot-head plant, and shun
The fumious Bong-o-flash!"
He took his zigzag joint in hand;
Long time the reefer fume he sought -
So rested he by the Hooka tree,
And rolled awhile in thought.
And as in puffish thought he vegged,
The Wackybacky, with cannibus aflame,
Came wafting through Norwegian wood,
And blurbled as it came!
One, two! One, two! and through and through
The zigzag blade went flicker-flax!
He left it dead, and with its head
He went scroungcraving snacks.

Come to my farms, my deadhead Dude!
O Maui Wowwie brownie day!

Triskelion Meeting Notes - October 22, 2009
Thursday's Meeting of the Triskelion Toastmasters brought a "gregarious"* group! Toastmaster Connie Pshigoda opened the meeting with trivial "palaver"* on the numerous celebrations, observances and holidays in October.
Krystyna Noworytta gave her 5th CC speech titled: Coco Chanel: Her Character as Fashion Designer. Gary Fuller evaluated her presentation. We now know that the name of Coco's perfume, Chanel #5 comes from a winning race horse!
Dan Pratt challenged us with Table Topics following the October theme. We gained wisdom from Jeanne's grandmother's life tips; learned that "elk are where you find them" according to Don's father's wisdom; and Dan's retirement account is full of holes . . . donut holes, that is.

Triskelion Meeting Notes - October 15, 2009
We had another great Triskelion Toastmaster's meeting this fine October Thursday. In true Triskelion fashion we accomplished this by hitting the trifecta with our superstars, our utility players, and our rookie participation.
Our super stars this week included Connie, Dave, and Nathan who came through at crunch time. Our utility players Krystyna, Dan, and Don kept the game close though reliable play. Our promising rookies Brendon and Jeanne sealed the game by stepping up in the roles of Timer, WOD, and topics master.
Connie was first at bat with an emotional story of a trip to the Grand Canyon with her daughters. She set the mood with a vivid description of her broken down rental car and a mob of crows eyeing their lunch. Its hard to push a car when the driver has a foot on the break.
Batting second was Krystyna with a talk about an English writer who decided, after 15 years, to leave Madison Avenue and move to southern France with his wife and two dogs to write books. Discovering a different life style, he began the second chapter in his life. Krystyna's Polish accent adds a lot of color to her story telling. She is really developing into an excellent speaker.
Third on the score card was Dan evaluating Connie's speech. He appreciated Connie's story of a mother and daughter adventure at the crux of a major transition in their lives.
Batting clean up was Dave with an evaluation of Krystyna's speech. I agree with Dave, Krystyna has great eye contact and real emotion in her delivery. Her passion for her subject is evident.
Brendan gets the win by pitching a perfect game as Topic Master. He was a penciled in as last minute starter and really delivered by challenging each of us with baseball related topics.
Here's the change-ups, curves, and fast balls he threw us. Don answered, "What’s in a Dodger dog?" by relating his first trip to Dodger Stadium. Dan's ex-wife would be the most likely reason he would crack a bat over his knee... (I can relate). Jeanne thinks baseball players chew tobacco to keep the throngs of female groupies at bay. Connie figures that baseball players scratch because of harsh detergent. Krystyna delighted us with a story of her trip to Cooperstown.
Dave was our MVP winning both best evaluator and best table topic speaker. He shared funny and interesting anecdotes on booing by fans. He concluded there is never a good reason to "boo"; nevertheless, the Philedelphia fans have perfected it to a fine art.
Our fellow Toastmaster Nathan is a superstar this week because he gave an important speech today before a House committee in Washington, DC. He delivered a 5-minute testimony on underinsurance. We hope to hear from him soon on his experience.
Let's extend this win streak by making next week another success. We still need a Toastmaster and speakers. Get off the bench and into the game!

Triskelion Toastmaster Meeting Notes - September 10, 2009
Today’s meeting was more civil than not, and was executed with as much decorum as Dan’s laid-back style could muster. Krystyna presented the word of the day. Connie, our club president, told the tale of her predecessors’ struggles long ago, and how their story impacts her life still today. Dave Tzrupek, graciously filling in as evaluator, performed an excellent assessment of her speech. It was great to see Dave again!
Julie Williams, (much thinner for some reason) who we were also very glad to see, presented table topics. (Congratulations to Julie on the birth of her second child.) In harmony with the theme of decorum and civility, she touched on situations at the movies, in traffic, e-mails, cell phone use, and at the grocery store. Dave won best table topic speaker.
Connie led a discussion of club business in which she shared feedback from our Area Governor visit, new materials for charting progress, etc. Dan should have raised his hand a little bit more, but most members present exhibited good manners.
We should mention that one of our club members, Nathan Wilkes, recently introduced President Obama at a Town Hall Meeting in Grand Junction.

Triskelion Toastmaster Meeting Notes for July 30, 2009
The theme of Thursday’s meeting was “Excuses, Excuses” led by Toastmaster Dan Pratt, who attempted to invent several excuses for not having a printed agenda. No problem, however – a dog ate his list of excuses.
We had two guests – Tom and Jackie – who are local marriage counselors.
Jason Carty delivered his 5th speech, entitled “To Tile, or Not to Tile.” He related his experiences during a recent home improvement project and gave us all tips for doing a great tile job. Although it seems like a lot of work, I’m sure Jason will want to repeat the process for anyone who has a large bathroom or Roman courtyard they would like finished. (Just kidding, Jason. Tile work ranks up there with helping someone move their grand piano up eight narrow flights of stairs.)
Don Lyman presented table topics which involved ethics questions based on Randy Cohen’s column which is syndicated by The New York Times. There were very thoughtful responses, with no one choosing “the dark side” in their solutions.
We concluded with a challenge to all our members to bring not just a friend, but also another member.

Meeting Notes - 18 June 2009
We had a great meeting this past Thursday. Jason enlightened us on the history (and his love of) coffee and Don gave us all a great overview of our super new Triskelion web site and many of the great new features and additions to it!
Jason was awarded best speech, Gary was best evaluator and one of our guests, Janice as well as Don tied for best Table Topics. Thanks to everyone for your participation in what was a really great meeting.
I was hoping to use one of the great new tools on our web site - the ability to document roles for the upcoming meeting - but when we left the meeting on Thursday all roles were open as they still are today. So...to start with we need someone to volunteer for Toastmaster and begin to fill the roles for next week's meeting. Connie will be unable to attend the meeting and Gary and a few of our other "veteran and consistent" members are out for a few weeks due to other commitments so we really need to look to our officers and members to step up as Thursday will be here before we know it.
If someone can please volunteer for the Toastmaster role before the weekend is out that would be great. And if anyone else is interested in any other roles, please let me know and I will keep track of those roles until the Toastmaster for this week is identified.

Triskelion Meeting Notes - June 11, 2009
Toastmaster Connie Pshigoda opened today's meeting by welcoming three guests: Janice Baker, Allison Mangan, returning guest Steve Brown and six members. Connie gave her final speech from the Advanced Manual series to complete her requirements for Advanced Communicator Bronze. Don Lyman served as Evaluator for Connie's speech.
The Word of the Day was: constellate, meaning to unite in a cluster.
Guest Janice Baker won Best Table Topics Speaker with her tale of the mystery midnight alarm malfunction.

How I Plan to Spend My Summer Vacation
Well, we gallivanted (roamed about for pleasure without any definite plan) as it turns out and took twists and turns in our vocal voyage.
Connie Pshigoda gave an award for outstanding physical fitness and devotion to helping others achieve their goals. I had no idea I was such a great a person, but Connie was so convincing, I had to accept. (Loved the trophy.)
Julie Williams convinced us to outsource our resources (I’m hiring her to write all of my speeches from now on). She used a phrase rarely heard nowadays: “on time and under budget.”
Don Lyman evaluated Connie’s speech and Ed Johnson evaluated Julie’s speech.
Then Ed, with such a strong desire to educate our members as to what a hot potato speech, gave us a heated tubular discussion and technical analysis of the elevated kinetics of the lowly tater. He was HOT, and I don’t mean necessarily physically attractive to me, but I think everyone enjoyed his spud-of-the-moment presentation.
Julie Williams (also double-dipping into the role pool) presented table topics. One of our guests (Laura) tied with Dave Trzupek for best answer. Their topics were based on coinage that Julie forgot to leave with the Treasurer.
Kudos go to Gary Fuller for his very comprehensive grammar report, and also to Julie for best speech and Ed Johnson for his evaluation.

Toastmasters 10-23-2008
Toastmasters was held in our spacious and comfortable new meeting room. For all who felt cramped in the old room you will be much more relaxed in the new setting.
Dave Trzupek showed us the way to survive these turbulent economic times with an informative speech. His five steps of action gave us all a way to take some control of our future.
Dave was evaluated by Ed Johnson.
Next, Karen Lang gave the 10th speech from the CC book focused on inspiring your audience. Congratulations to Karen for completing her Competent Communication manual. She now plans to focus on helping each of us reach our goals in her role as VP of Education.
Karen was evaluated by Connie Pshigoda.
During Table Topics each person talked about a time in their childhood when they got into trouble. Gary Fuller told us of a time when his brothers, friends, and he were playing army and launching grenades (rock) at each other. Gary's rock found its mark and sealed his fate.
For next week’s meeting, Connie will be our Toastmaster and Linda will be our Table Topics Master. All other roles are open. See you then!

Triskelion Toastmasters Thursday 10-2-2008
Here are the meeting notes from Triskelion Toastmasters Thursday 10-2-2008 meeting,
Toastmaster was Eric Peterson
Speaker today was Todd Rys who did his icebreaker and told us of fun childhood memories of family vacations that stretched from “90 minutes north of Mexico to 90 minutes south of Canada” and wound up at a ranch in Montana with plenty of outdoor fun.
Todd was evaluated by Julie Williams.
Table Topics were hosted by Dan Pratt who had tell stories of head games, sports games or table games. Gary Fuller won best table topic for a story of tackling his opponent in football, a play that ultimately caused a 30 yard gain for the other team. J

After a great turnout last week, attendance was down again. Only five members and one guest showed up. Our guest was Suzanne. She recently returned to work for Shaw and wanted to see what Toastmasters was all about. It turned out to be a great little meeting as witnessed here:
Our Toastmaster, Don Lyman, kicked things off with a poem recital:

Eric Wales gave his fifth speech from the CC manual -- Your Body Speaks. Eric is a full time commercial real estate investor who began his career nearly 10 years ago. He began investing in single family homes, and roughly 4 years ago transitioned into commercial properties. Each day he become more passionate about this new found love and enjoys the hunt.
Eric's speech was titled "How to Identify A Commercial Real Estate Opportunity." He gave us some great advice:
- Locate a mentor
- Get educated
- Surround yourself with who know more than you
- Tell everyone you are a commercial real estate investor
- Meet every real estate agent you can
- Learn how to evaluate properties
- Have at least one lawyer on the team
- After following these steps, do it all again
Evaluator
Gary Fuller evaluated Eric's speech. In keeping with the goal of this speech, he observed that Eric's eye contact engaged everyone in the audience and Eric's use of hand gestures was excellent. Gary advised us that a speaker should move around and not be tied to the lectern. He also stated that in order to enunciate in the English language one should loosen the mouth.
Gary's general evaluation of the meeting was that attendance was low. It is the Toastmaster's job to do the best he can to encourage participation in the meeting. To that end, please bring a guest to the meeting next week!

Dan Pratt won table topics with a funny story about the time he tried to take ice to school for show-and-tell. As the ice sat in his sack lunch, he wished that it would have sublimated rather than what it did do in the warm classroom.

Eye on China
All eyes are on China with the beginning of the 2008 Summer Olympics. The Beijing Olympics start at 8pm on the 8th day of the 8th month in 2008. In case you didn't get it, China has a thing for the number 8 which represents a lucky number for wealth in their culture. I hope you are able to watch the opening ceremonies on Friday, August 8, 2008.

Meeting Summary, July 31, 2008
Eric Peterson presided as Toastmaster with his theme “Labor Day” (we’re a little early, but thinking a month ahead). He entertained us with the history and trivia surrounding this last summer holiday.
Our guest, Jim, said he enjoyed the meeting; he even participated in table topics. We hope Jim returns and joins our club.
We welcomed back--to Toastmasters and the Shaw Group--Ed Johnson, aka., Albert Einstein, who started out as our Lt. Col. Evaluator, and was later promoted to General Evaluator.
Word of the day, by Julie Williams: parvenu - One that has recently or suddenly risen to an unaccustomed position of wealth or power and has not yet gained the prestige, dignity, or manner associated with it.
Janet Reese, our first speaker, presented a 20-minute speech from the Professional Speaker advanced manual with the objective to entertain and inform. Her topic: How to get along with mixed generations: Gen Y, Gen X, Boomer, and Traditionalist aka. Veteran. She recruited a few volunteers who added some levity to the speech by acting out their generational roles. Eric P. was a Veteran; Julie, a Boomer; Don Lindgren, a Gen Xer; and Mike Angel, a Gen Yer.
Our second speaker Mikael Roth gave his 2nd manual speech with the objective to “organize your speech.” He talked about how music plays an important role in all our lives, and especially his. The only thing missing was a solo singing performance.
Dave T. evaluated Janet’s speech and Eric W. evaluated Mikael.
Our Table Topics master Mike A. asked thought provoking (more than usual) and fun questions such as: “What do they pack styrofoam in when they ship it?,” and “If a parsley farmer gets sued, can they garnish his wages?” We asked Mike how in the heck he came up with such “heady” questions. We still don’t know.

July 24 meeting summary/Tour de America
Did you know the Tour de France is a bike race that is 2,200+ miles long? Getting on a bike makes you feel like a kid again. Have you jumped on a bike lately to ride to the grocery store, bookstore or Tour de America? If not, you may start this new adventure by renting a bike from your local bike store, and then take off riding as there are hundred's and hundred's of bike paths right in your own Colorado backyard. Don't worry about someone trying to pass you as you will hear them say, "on your left" as they pass you by. It is fun to learn the lingo when you try any new sport.

Meeing summary 6-19-08
Today's meeting "Economize & Thrive" was fun and dynamic as everyone creatively brainstormed ways of economizing in order to thrive with the rising cost of living.
Table topics master Eric P. challenged us with theme-related questions. Dave T. won Table Topics for his "lights out" answer, speaker Gary Fuller told us how to be a coach-leader and Don Lindgren spoke on gratitude. Both speeches were winners, but Gary walked away with the hardware.
Ms. Pshigoda ever so adeptly oversaw evaluations and sized up the meeting, while Mike A. and Deron W. offered their pearls of wisdom tips to speakers. Mike A. won best evaluator. Connie and Janet color-coordinated their pink colored tops...now that's meeing planning at its best. Our word of the day "penurious" matched the theme perfectly, thanks to Jullie Williams.
Toastmaster Janet Reese was grateful to everyone who participated and planned the program. We laughed, learned and economized today...what more can you ask for? See you next week!

Table topics master Eric P. challenged us with theme-related questions. Dave T. won Table Topics for his "lights out" answer, speaker Gary Fuller told us how to be a coach-leader and Don Lindgren spoke on gratitude. Both speeches were winners, but Gary walked away with the hardware.
Ms. Pshigoda ever so adeptly oversaw evaluations and sized up the meeting, while Mike A. and Deron W. offered their pearls of wisdom tips to speakers. Mike A. won best evaluator. Connie and Janet color-coordinated their pink colored tops...now that's meeing planning at its best. Our word of the day "penurious" matched the theme perfectly, thanks to Jullie Williams.
Toastmaster Janet Reese was grateful to everyone who participated and planned the program. We laughed, learned and economized today...what more can you ask for? See you next week!
